Halloween Haunting 101: DIY Halloween Plaques

Good evening, Housemates!

I’ve been quite occupied with fun Halloween craft projects the last couple weeks- one of which I wanted to share with you guys here!

So, the wheels have been turning for the party as I shared in one of my last posts. I decided that this year, it’d be fantastic if I made my own trophies for the costume contest. Now, i’ve done gift baskets before, small plastic trophies, gift bags, etc etc. This year I wanted to try something different.

I always worry that once someone gets their costume contest prize home, it ends up trashed or lost amongst a box of random junk. Yes.. insert sad, sad whimpers here.

This year, I thought I’d make it more interesting. What better way to celebrate your costume prowess than with a “plaque” that you can hang on your wall all year round?!

I came up with the idea to use canvas and certain items to create three-dimensional award plaques! Not only was this super easy to execute, but I think it will be immensely effective once completed and presented.

I know that if it were me, this shit would be up on display all year round!

Photo Oct 08.jpegNow, mind that these are still being completed. The basic concept is what we’re talking about right now, and how you want to proceed beyond this starting point is up to you and your lovely imagination! πŸ™‚

Also don’t limit yourself to making plaques for a party- you could definitely just make these for some flair in your favorite room of the house!

You don’t need much to start…

Photo Oct 07.jpeg

  • Glue gun or other industrial strength glue (this glue gun has Gorilla Glue cartridges- real deal, man!)
  • Craft Paint- colors of your choosing!
  • Brushes- duh.
  • White canvas- I went with a medium sized canvas but you could go bigger or smaller depending on what prop you’re mounting.
  • Plaque shaped apliques – this is optional and I ended up holding on using mine until I finish everything.
  • Statement prop – Pick a prop any prop! In this case I used several masks, a rubber knife, and the Freddy glove.

Start with some paint…

Photo Oct 07-1.jpegPaint up your canvas with a few layers of the color of your choice. The Michael Myers one is going to be black and orange vertical stripes. I worked on three different canvases at once to try to get as much finished in one night. πŸ˜€

Place your prop!

Photo Oct 08-1.jpegThis particular canvas I wanted to mount a Freddy glove. I initially wanted it to have the hand dead center with the fingers slightly fanned, however, I’d have to stuff the shit out of the glove and try to place it just right. Not gonna happen. So I vouched for making it look as if the hand was raking over the canvas.

Photo Oct 08-2.jpeg

I angled the glove over the edge and staged the fingers to see if it would look effective if I started gluing things down. The biggest issue was adding dimension to the fabric part of the glove as it looked so very stupid laying flat.

I used the carton for which the glove came in and cut a strip of cardboard off the top. I then curled it and sized it to the wrist of the glove, gluing the cardboard together, and slipping it in place. I then let the glove open folded the bottom edge over the edge of the canvas, adjusting the length so that there was so slack at eye level. Once that piece was glued to the lip of the canvas, I pinched together the excess and sides and pulled them back over the lip as well to glue the glove shut. Once together, I adjusted the cardboard accordingly.

It was a lot but hey, it was well worth the few minutes it took to get everything just right!

Photo Oct 08-4.jpeg

From there I propped up the fingers and staged them in a way that worked for me. You can certainly bend and spread these puppies any which way you like!

Taking a glue gun, I carefully glued the tip of each blade down.

Now in most glue projects, all that excess lumpage surrounding the tips of the blades would look totally fucked up. In this case, you can use all the glue you want and make it work to your advantage.

Paint some details…

Photo Oct 08-5.jpeg

The best comes after you finish gluing all the shit down. I used a bit of red paint to make it look like this glove had raked across the canvas and was creeping back up over the edge. This is where your glue job comes in handy. The more blobby dimension you add the more it will look as though your blades are embedded in the canvas like flesh. Blend out your edges with a toothpick or brush before allowing to dry.

Once finished, hit this with as much gore as you’d like! I used a darker red and a bright red to add a little bit of dimension. You can also put some paint down and drag some sloppy hot glue over it, pulling a toothpick through after wards to create a really fun 3D effect. Follow that with some more red paint and you, my dear, have quite the masterpiece on your hands!

Finishing touches…

I found small paper placeholder shaped tags at Michael’s and used them to create the award plaques at the bottom of each focal object. Voila! You’re done and your party guests have a trophy they can proudly hang in their house all year long!

So, tell me: Is this a project you’re going to do for your party or for your favorite room in the house?? What titles would Β you crown with these plaques at your party?? Sound off in the comments.Β

Until next time!

Damon Salvatore: A Tribute To Thee

I’m feeling nostalgic.

I’m not sure if you watched The Vampire Diaries but I can assure you that regardless of that, you’ll still be utterly enamored with the man in this post.πŸ€“

I was heartbroken when the series ended a few months ago. I mean, we’re talking ugly-cried during the finale and had serious withdrawals for a few weeks.

Don’t judge me. 😌

I’d like to think my heartbreak was justified as the series was very well written. We’re not necessarily talking Oscar-worthy or life-changing, but it was written and produced by one of my favorite screenwriters: Kevin Williamson.

Yes! The same Kevin Williamson who wrote the Scream movies and had a hand in many of my other favorite teen-screams from the 90s.

I was urged to watch TVD midway through the series solely so that I could join the urger in regular viewing and discussion once caught up. I reluctantly gave it a chance, a big selling point being my faith in K-Wills writing.

Holy shit balls did I get hooked.

I wouldn’t say obsessed but I definitely hung on every single episode. This was intensified when he was introduced… yes, Damon Salvatore. ❀️

tumblr_mdld3apn7h1rpp221o1_500

Sure, sure, I know you’re sitting there thinking “This bitch is crazy- what’s the big deal? Looks like a douche to me πŸ˜’“, in which case my response is yes, you’re 95% correct with that statement as I damn well may be a crazy bitch and Damon is definitely a douche.

Definitely….

A douche…

Definitely.

Don’t get me wrong! I thought he was useless for a good little while, but even I succumbed to his charms…

tumblr_nmjwl7gh5i1sghe4oo1_500

So, let’s note right now that our oldest Salvatore bro was a pretty huge jerk most of the series, but after a while, in a weird way, it started to grow on me.

That snark and blasΓ© attitude was everything. I can directly relate in that sense… I also appreciated his ability to down 5 gallons of Bourbon per episode without anyone really saying anything about it.

He’s by far the sexiest high-functioning alcoholic vampire in all of tv land. That would make for an interesting episode of Intervention, no? πŸ˜€

After being reminded of Ian Smolder-holder’s ability to portray Damon in the most perfect manner this week by a colleague of mine, I felt compelled (get it?! No? TVD joke…πŸ€“) to put this post into the universe in hopes that it spawns a parallel world in which Damon is a real-life, corporeal heartthrob, taking names and ruining lives one small town at a time! 😍

Without further ado, here’s my list of lovable quirks that made Damon Damon.

Let’s begin, yes?

His wonderful communication skills.

He knows a thing or two about love. ❀️

He knows his brother extremely well.

Also, very much a family man.

He’ll always save you a seat.

He’s an adamant bookworm… πŸ“š

And is up-to-date with all the new releases.

He takes care of himself…

For the most part.

An excellent friend..

Always willing to do you a favor.

He knows just what to do to make you laugh.

He’ll always keep your heart close. 😍

Now, if you’ve been sold just a little, I’ll urge you now to hop on Netflix and binge the series at your own risk. Here, “At your own risk” means that you may or may not fall in love with the show and ugly-cry when it’s all said and done. 😭

I’ll be here for support, Love.

Regardless, here’s to you Damon- and every smile, tear, laugh, scoff and gawk you’ve provided me through those amazing seven seasons. Shout out to all the fantasies and blue-eyed/leather-jacket clad dream visits i’ve received since first meeting you. 😏

Now, I want to know: Did you watch The Vampire Diaries? If so, who were your favorite characters and why? If not, are you interested now? Or have I simply piqued your Smolderholder appetite? In which case… yes, girl, yes. Β

I leave you with a little sight for your sore eyes. 😏

Until next time! πŸ™‚

Award Worthy: Leibster Nomination

This past week Vespertine House was nominated for the Leibster Award! πŸ˜†πŸŽ‰

Huzzah! πŸŽ‰πŸ˜€

I was nominated by lovely beauty blogger, Anna Bankester at Bee Beauty! ☺️ She’s fantastic and I highly recommend you visit her and subscribe!

Now, as far as this award thingy goes (pardon me, it’s my first time😏), I believe it’s one of those things used to sort of get to know other bloggers and help them get acquainted with your audience, and also for subscribers to get to know the blogger better.

Which I love! πŸ˜ƒ

So! Here are my 11 personal factoids:

  • I graduated Magna Cum Laude with my BBA in Marketing last fall
  • I don’t eat bread or anything resembling bread (cake, donuts, bagels, pastries etc.)  because the texture makes me queasy (hey, I didn’t say I was normal ☺️)
  • I’m a Style Ambassador for Harper’s Bazaar
  • I’m also an endorsed artist at Daisy Rock Guitars
  • I own $800 boots… That I rarely wear ☺️ (compliments of Belstaff & Harper’s Bazaar)
  • I live in southwest Florida!
  • Halloween is my favorite day of the year, I love it more than my own birthday πŸŽƒ
  • I collect postcards and I love receiving them!
  • I casually collect Elvis memorabilia too πŸ’œ
  • I have nyctophobia and must sleep with a nightlight
  • My favorite horror films are tied between Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, Scream & Trick ‘r Treat.πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

I was also asked a few questions!

  • First Makeup Product you purchased ever? Favorite Brand and Why?

I want to say it was black eyeliner and black lipstick in middle school lol. I was pretty goth. πŸ˜‚ My favorite brand right now is Makeup Revolution love their “Welcome to the Pleasuredome” Pallette from their Salvation line! Such great pigmentation and quality for a bang of a bargain!😏

  • What’s the most popular trend currently where you live?

Because this is Florida and it’s hot season, I’m going to say Flip-Flops.

  • Biggest Inspiration for your style

This will surely sound strange but it’s a little bit edgy and a lot-a-bit James Bond   Villainesses. ☺️ i hear that “You dress like an assassin” bit often. πŸ˜πŸ’œ

  • What made you become a Beauty Blogger?

Well, I like beauty and fashion and Halloween and horror so I blog about all those things solely because they interest me enough to have an opinion about them. I reckon I only blog about any of those topics when the mood strikes too lol. ☺️ but, I like sharing my take on SFX makeup and the like mainly because I think others would like it or be able to take something away from it… Or at least that’s what I’m hoping is happening! 😁

  • High end, luxury brands or drug store? Which do you prefer?

Hmm, somewhere in between I think. I get necessities at the drugstore but I usually go moderate to high on particular items. Eyeshadow mainly.

  • How has your style evolved over the years?

It’s changed a lot I think! I tried to incorporate more color but I always end up back at black and dark washes. ☺️

  • How many hours do you spend reading beauty blogs roughly?

Maybe an hour or so, if that. Reason being is that I like things to be simple and straightforward when it comes to beauty. If it gets too pedantic and technical I’ll lose interest relatively fast. ☺️

  • How long do you spend getting ready for a night out?

15minutes – 4hrs… Depends on the night 😏

  • What’s your ideal night out?

My absolute perfect night would be $200 & Free drinks at the Casino with a few friends. πŸ’œπŸ’œ I LOVE going to the casino! Breaking even or leaving ahead would also make that awesome.😌

  • Where do you see your beauty blog going in the future?

Hm, I’m not sure and honestly I didn’t think it’d do this well to begin with lol.☺️ I hope it continues to grow and that people continue to enjoy what I share. πŸ’œ

Here are my nominations to keep things moving:

Jeanette Andromeda – Horrormade.com

Meep380 – ValsVogueXO

Glamazonianz – Keeping up with the Glamazonianz

Emma – The Moth Embalmer

Hayley Knighten – Booksaredelicious.com

And! My questions for your ladies are as follows:

  • What are you currently obsessed with? Why?
  • Pick one: Summer Beach Party, Fall Festival, Winter Weekend at the Cabin, or Spring Vacation- why did you choose what you chose?
  • Who has inspired you the most?
  • What are you currently reading?
  • What’s your favorite movie?

I want to thank Anna at Bee Beauty once more for the nomination! And thanks to everyone for stopping down to check out my blog and share your thoughts! I love reading your comments and getting to know you all!β˜ΊοΈπŸ’œ

No. 1

The macabre, dark, deviant and strange are words that categorize the most interesting and beautiful things in this universe. Fact.

I think a lot of people would agree with that.

Hi there! I’m Sarah and I have a taste for darker, stranger things. Shamelessly. 😁 I’m bringing this blog to you as a way to share my creepy finds and interests with a wider range of people. As far as tastes go, you can often find me researching something strange or making plans for Halloween.

Yes, regardless of the month or season, I’m nearly always planning for Halloween. ☺️

I want to use this space on the interweb to not only share the things I love but also keep a personal record for future reference. I’m a bit forgetful. 😏

So, to make this quick, here are a few things that you’re guaranteed to see here at some point:

  • Product reviews! (Seasonal Halloween products, makeup, jewelry, services etc!)
  • Top pick lists (oh, I love lists- they’re simple and fun!)
  • Tutorials (I create a lot of things for Halloween parties and just to satisfy my own dark little cravings; I’ll try to share these with you ☺️)
  • Fashion, Art, News & more! (Huzzah! πŸ˜†)

With that said, I hope you’ll stick around and join the conversation! I really look forward to meeting like-minded creepers and can’t wait to pick your brain! Literally…

Kidding!

But really… 😏πŸ”ͺ
